PRESS RELEASE: Intergroup Fighting Against Poverty and Exclusion
Strasbourg 12 March 2008

The Fourth World Intergroup of the European Parliament, has just held it’s first meeting of the year under the chair of Mr Mendez de Vigo (Spanish Peoples Party).
The Committee noted with deep regret that the European Council of Ministers decided on the multi annual framework of the Fundamental Rights Agency without taking the opinion of the European Parliament into account which proposed that extreme poverty and social exclusion be taken as one of the thematic areas of the Agency due to the clear link of the subject with human rights.
The intergroup will study article 5 of the rules of the agency in order to see if there are any other possibilities for this demand to be taken into account knowing that the Eurobarometer indicates that the fight against poverty remains a priority of European citizens.
Despite the disappointment, the intergroup will continue to fight to respond to the aspirations of our citizens.
