This year for the seventh time between the 4th and the 7th of June the European parliament will be elected. To many European citizens this seems to be the only way possible to take part in the political process. Still only few know that things have changed with the treaty of Lisbon.

Over the decades, the European Union (EU) has developed progressively from a goal-oriented economical community into a political union. Although Brussels increasingly makes decisions concerning more and more areas of life, European democracy functions "top-down". The EU offers its citizens hardly any possibilities to directly influence political decisions.

The treaty of Lisbon's article 11(4) says that every citizen’s group concerning Europe in entirety with a million or more votes has to be taken up in the political decision-making process.
It is important for me to share the knowledge that political participation in Europe is possible beyond political parties, especially since the European parliament will be elected this year. Europe-wide, direct, acitve votes for European citizens' are possible.

Please have a look at: www.youthweek.eu
The fourth European Youth Week celebrates twenty years of European programmes for youth. It's the perfect time to look to the future and discuss the challenges that young people in Europe will be facing in the years to come.

I hope that the "European Day of Languages" will encourage many people to learn a new language. Especially in the United Kingdom where the interest in learning languages seems to be declining.

You may know that four schools in Britain have introduced Esperanto, the neutral international language, in order to test its propaedeutic values?

The pilot project is being monitored by the University of Manchester, and I believe the project deserves academic appraisal.

An interesting video can be seen at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8837438938991452670

Otherwise http://www.lernu.net might help

Learning languages and learning about other cultures is certainly a good thing, but a neglected question is: which language should I learn? I hope you’ll allow me to make the case for learning Esperanto, the planned international language. The Esperanto Association of Britain is offering a free postal course in the language.
